The standard circuit breakers for 120 volt circuits utilize one slot. If you need 240 volts, you will utilize two slots. It is common for some manufacturers to design thin breakers which take only have of the space as a standard breaker.

This is because these areas are around water and sensitive to shorting. It is common to be required to reset this breaker more frequently. It is a good idea to test a GFCI breaker as they are used.
