Installing Pushmatic Circuit Breakers
Pushmatic circuit breakers come in double pole and single pole systems. There are many considerations when installing this type of breaker. These factors include the application, safety, and product details. Pushmatic circuit breakers are the most common type of breaker used today in home electric panels.
There are two primary types of pushmatic breakers used today. These include the double and single pole breakers. You will only use a single pole breaker for a 15 amp 120 volt system. Double pole pushmatic electric breakers are typically used for a 20 amp panel. It is very important to use the proper type of breaker when replacing bad breakers in a circuit breaker panel. If you use the wrong type of breaker, it could become a fire hazard and cause issues with the breakers continuously tripping. Never install or change out breakers in a panel if you aren’t sure how to do it or what you are doing.
It is very important to be safe when installing pushmatic circuit breakers in a panel. If you have a shortage or the electricity continues to shut off because of a bad breaker, it is time to replace it. You must use safety precautions when replacing any type of breaker. Always be sure you are grounded when working with any type of electrical device or to replace circuit breaker. An electrical panel is dangerous to perform work on. You won’t just get shocked if you touch the wrong wire or you are electrocuted. It takes less than one amp to electrocute and kill someone. Don’t think for a second you are safe. The best way to ground yourself when working on a panel is to place a rubber mat on the ground and stand on it at all times until you are finished working on the panel. Wearing shoes with rubber soles is another way to be sure you are grounded. You should also never work on electrical panels or replace a bulldog breaker if there is any standing water present. In addition, be sure to turn off the power to the panel. Always use proper devices to test the power to the panel and ensure there isn’t any power coming to the panel.
The two pole pushmatic circuit breakers should be used for specific applications. The best and recommended application when using pushmatic breakers is for electrical solutions such as baseboard heating, fan forced heating, and even air conditioners. When using these breakers, it is important to keep in mind they should be used for 240 volt air conditioners. Do not exceed this voltage and always be sure the breakers you are using are for the proper application of electricity in the panel. Each two pole breaker also requires ¾ inches of space.
Pushmatic circuit breakers are the most common type of breaker and they are available for one and two pole panels. Always be sure you use the proper breaker for the voltage offered in the panel. Safety is vital when touching or working on any type of electrical panel. Be sure you use proper safety precautions when you replace any type of breaker in a panel.
